Growing Up Ciociari

Home/The Book

A memoir of two places, and the water between them.

Growing Up Ciociari by Domenico Zagaroli. Published late November 2026, available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

The world it comes from

Ciociaria is not a province on a map so much as a name people gave themselves — the hill country southeast of Rome, a landscape of stone villages set on ridges, of terraces cut into slopes, of olives and wheat and vines, where the dialect came first and Italian came second.

In the years after the war that region was poor in money and rich in custom. A household kept its own animals, cured its own meat, baked in a shared oven, and measured the year by feast days as much as by harvest. Everybody worked, and the church, the square and the kitchen were the three rooms in which a life was conducted.

The leaving

By the mid-1950s, half the young men of the hill towns had already gone — to Argentina, to France, to the steel towns of Ohio and Pennsylvania. The letters they sent home were read aloud in kitchens. In 1958 it was Domenico’s family’s turn.

The book follows the passage as it was actually made: the trunks and the goodbyes, the train to the port, the ship, the days of open water, the first sight of an American harbor, and then the less photographable arrivals — the rented rooms, the first job, the language learned by ear, the quiet arithmetic of what had been gained against what had been given up.

It ends neither in triumph nor in regret, but in the honest middle ground most emigrant families know: two countries, one life, and a memory that keeps both furnished.

What it is not

Not a history of Italy, not a family genealogy, and not a book about famous people. It is one man’s memory of an ordinary world that happened to be disappearing as he grew up in it — written down so that the grandchildren, and anyone else who came from somewhere, can find it.
